Urban oil extraction has been ongoing in Southern California for over a century. Los Angeles is the largest urban oil field in the United States. Today, approximately ⅓ of Los Angeles County residents live less than a mile from an active drill site. While many Angelenos live near oil extraction, some low-income communities live closer and have fewer protections than residents in wealthier parts of the city. Our work in this area examines the health consequences for residents who live near active oil development and considers trajectories that can support a transition to just and equitable living environments.

RESEARCH

Los Angeles Voices on Oil, Community, Environment, and Salud (LAS VOCES) Study

In collaboration with University of California, Irvine and Redeemer Community Partnership, the LAS VOCES study examines the links between urban oil drilling, air quality, and respiratory health in South LA. As a community-academic collaboration, the project aims to protect public health in the context of urban oil drilling.
